Number of jobseekers decreases by 12.1% within one year

15 186 jobseekers residing in Luxembourg and available for the labour market, were registered with ADEM on 31 December 2018. Compared to December 2017, this represents a decrease of 2 097 persons or 12.1%. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, calculated by the STATEC, is at 5.0%.


Especially young jobseekers under the age of 30 benefit from the decreasing unemployment (-18.6 %) as well as low-skilled jobseekers (-13.6%). The number of long-term unemployed decreased by 7.8% whereas the number of jobseekers with disabilities or reduced work capacity decreased by 7.6% within one year.
ADEM informs that a new procedure for the registration of jobseekers has started to be introduced in December 2018. As a result, there may be a time lag in the statistical recording of the new registrations.


As of 31 December 2018, 4 035 persons took part in employment measures. This represents a decrease of 67 persons (-1.6 %). During the month of December 2018, Luxembourg employers declared 2 464 vacant positions to ADEM, which are 342 (+16.1%) more than in December 2018. Throughout 2018, the total number of positions declared to ADEM exceeded the 40,000 mark, which means an increase of 14% compared to 2017.
