As of November 30, 2019, 15,351 resident job seekers were registered with ADEM. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of 943 people, or 6.5%. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate determined by STATEC was 5.4% in November 2019, which corresponds to an increase of 0.1 points compared to the previous month and 0.2 points compared to the previous year. Unemployment has risen at a time when employment is still increasing at a steady pace (over a year, 3.7%, according to the latest information from STATEC).
The sharp increase in the number of jobseekers is explained by a backlash which comes after the exceptional decrease observed at the end of 2018. As indicated at the time, this decrease was due to the new registration procedure for jobseekers. This caused delays in the statistical recording of the new jobseekers’ registrations.
