Unemployment rate falls to 5.6%

The number of available resident jobseekers registered with ADEM stood at 16,807 on 31 July 2021. Compared to June 2021, this is an increase of 405 people. Compared to July 2020, this is a decrease of 2,955 persons or 15%. In July 2020 the labour market was still heavily impacted by the aftermath of the health crisis and containment, with an annual increase of 26.1% in jobseekers. The current decline can therefore be seen as a backlash. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate calculated by STATEC now stands at 5.6% and thus continues to fall compared to previous months.

In July 2021, 2,164 resident jobseekers registered with ADEM, a decrease of 64 people or 2.9% compared to July 2020. In Jule 2020 the number of registrations was relatively low, due to the massive use of short-time work.

The number of resident jobseekers receiving full unemployment benefit fell by 1,724 or 17.3% year-on-year to 8,239. The number of people benefitting from an employment measure stands at 4,437, well above the level observed in July 2020 (+476 people, or 12%). In July 2020, as a result of the containment and the new sanitary rules, some employment measures were still at a standstill and activity was recovering only timidly.

During July 2021, employers reported 3,481 job vacancies to ADEM, an increase of 22.2% compared to July 2020. As of July 31, 2021, ADEM had 9,714 job openings on file. Over one year, the number of available positions has increased by 38.7%. The indicators on job vacancies are back to, or even above, the levels before the health crisis.
