Language Tests - FAQ
1. General Information
1.1. What is the language test about?
The language test is a basic online assessment that evaluates your grammar and vocabulary skills in a given language.
It is a short, standardised test designed to provide a reliable and objective indication of your proficiency level.
The results help ADEM provide you with more appropriate support during your job search and improve your chances of entering the labour market.
1.2. Is the test mandatory?
Yes.
When your personal counsellor issues you with a convocation notice, you are required to take the test before the deadline indicated on the document.
Without a valid test result, it may be more difficult to adapt the support you receive or match you with suitable job offers.
Please note: There is no “pass” or “fail”. The test is used solely to assess your language level.
1.3. I already have a language certificate: do I still need to take the test?
You do not need to take the test if you have an official language certificate. However, the certificate must:
- be issued in Luxembourgish, French, German or English;
- clearly state a CEFR level;
- have been issued less than two years ago.
If these conditions are met, your certificate will be accepted and recorded in your file by your personal counsellor.
1.4. In which languages can I take the test?
The tests can be taken in the languages recorded in your file, including:
- Luxembourgish;
- French;
- German;
- English.
Your personal counsellor will inform you which language or languages you need to be tested in.
Each language has its own access code, which is indicated on your convocation notice.
1.5. Who should I contact in the event of a technical problem?
In the event of a technical problem, you can:
- check your internet connection;
- disable automatic translation;
- try another device, if possible.
If the problem persists, you can:
- go to one of our Club Emploi locations, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.:
- Luxembourg-Hamm – 13A, rue de Bitbourg, L-1273 Luxembourg
- Esch-Belval – 1, boulevard Porte de France, L-4360 Esch-Belval
- Diekirch – 7, avenue de la Gare, L-9233 Diekirch
- contact your personal counsellor.
2. Before starting the test
2.1. I have not received or have lost my convocation notice: what should I do?
Your convocation notice contains your access code for the test and the period during which you must complete it.
If you can no longer find this document, please contact your personal counsellor so that a new convocation notice can be issued.
2.2. Where can I find my access code?
Your access code appears on the document entitled EVALUATION ELEMENTAIRE DES COMPÉTENCES LINGUISTIQUES TEST DE LANGUE.
Without this code, you cannot start the test.
This document also specifies:
- the language to be tested;
- the date from which the test is available;
- the deadline by which the test must be completed;
- the approximate duration of the test;
- the link to the test or a QR code providing quick access to it.
2.3. How do I access the test?
- Visit the relevant webpage or scan the QR code:
- Enter your access code.
- Click “Confirm” to start the test.
Please note: Each access code is assigned to one specific test and one language.
2.4. My access code is not working: what should I do?
There may be several reasons for this:
- the code may have been entered incorrectly;
- the deadline may have passed;
- the test may already have been completed.
If the deadline has not yet passed and your code still does not work, please contact your personal counsellor. They can check the situation and, if necessary, issue you with a new code.
2.5. I do not have a computer or smartphone: where can I take the test?
If you do not have a device or need assistance accessing the test, you can complete it at one of ADEM’s Club Emploi locations without an appointment, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.:
- Luxembourg-Hamm – 13A, rue de Bitbourg, L-1273 Luxembourg
- Esch-Belval – 1, boulevard Porte de France, L-4360 Esch-Belval
- Diekirch – 7, avenue de la Gare, L-9233 Diekirch
2.6. Do I need to disable automatic translation?
Yes.
Automatic translation tools can alter the text and cause certain questions to be displayed incorrectly or become difficult to understand.
Before starting the test:
- check whether a translation icon is displayed in your browser;
- select “Show original” or “Never translate this site”, depending on your browser.
If the test displays incoherent or incorrect sentences, automatic translation is usually enabled.
2.7. How long does the test take?
The duration of the test is indicated on your convocation notice.
The test takes approximately 20 minutes on average, although this may vary depending on your language level.
We recommend taking the test in a quiet place with a stable internet connection.
2.8. Which devices can I use to take the test?
You can take the test on:
- a computer;
- a tablet;
- a smartphone using iOS or Android.
2.9. I missed the deadline: what should I do?
If the deadline indicated on your convocation notice has passed, your access code is no longer valid.
In this case, please contact your personal counsellor.
A new test request will be created with:
- a new access code;
- a new validity period.
It is not possible to extend the original deadline.
3. During the test
3.1. How does the test work?
The test starts automatically once you have entered your access code.
You simply need to follow the instructions displayed on the screen.
The test is adaptive. This means that the questions adjust according to your answers in order to assess your language level as accurately as possible.
3.2. Can I interrupt the test and resume it later?
Yes.
If you need to leave the test, your progress is automatically saved for 15 days.
You can resume the test from where you stopped by entering your access code again on the official webpage.
Important:
- You must resume and complete the test before the deadline indicated on your convocation notice.
- Once the deadline has passed, the access code will no longer be valid.
3.3. The test appears incorrect or incoherent: what should I do?
An incoherent test is always caused by an automatic translation function being enabled.
If you notice:
- strange sentences;
- distorted words;
- unreadable instructions.
Please exit the test, disable all automatic translation functions in your browser and then restart the test.
3.4. The test does not load or is not working properly: who should I contact?
If the test does not open or is not working properly, we recommend that you first:
- check your internet connection;
- disable automatic translation tools;
- try another device or browser.
If the problem persists, you can obtain assistance at one of our Club Emploi locations, Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.:
- Luxembourg-Hamm – 13A, rue de Bitbourg, L-1273 Luxembourg
- Esch-Belval – 1, boulevard Porte de France, L-4360 Esch-Belval
- Diekirch – 7, avenue de la Gare, L-9233 Diekirch
Your personal counsellor can also check whether your access code is still active.
3.5. Can I use a translator, external assistance or online tools?
No.
The test must be completed without assistance so that your actual language level can be assessed.
Using an automatic translation tool alters the questions and leads to an incorrect result.
3.6. I was redirected to a website other than ADEM’s website: is this normal?
Yes.
The language test is carried out on Altissia, an external platform used by several public institutions in Luxembourg.
It is therefore normal to be redirected to a website such as learn.altissia.org.
The data transmitted to Altissia is processed anonymously and used exclusively for the technical operation of the test.
No personal information that could be used to identify you is transmitted to the platform.
This solution is secure and forms part of the standard language-test procedure.
4. After the Test
4.1. Where can I see my results?
Your results are displayed directly on the screen once you have completed the test.
The level shown corresponds to the assessment carried out by the platform.
Please note:
- The test does not provide an official language certificate.
- No downloadable document is available on the test website.
- Upon request, your personal counsellor can provide you with an internal statement indicating the languages tested and the levels achieved. This statement has no official status but may be used as part of the support you receive from ADEM.
4.2. What do the levels A1, A2, B1 and so on mean?
The results are expressed according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a framework used throughout Europe to describe language proficiency.
The language test is a short test that mainly assesses:
- grammar;
- vocabulary;
- reading comprehension.
It provides a general indication of your overall language level.
However, some areas of the CEFR are not assessed, including:
- speaking;
- listening comprehension;
- detailed written production;
- interaction in real-life situations.
The level obtained is therefore an estimate based solely on the skills assessed by this test.
The CEFR comprises six official levels:
- A1 – Breakthrough: You understand and use very simple expressions relating to immediate needs. (Basic user)
- A2 – Waystage: You can exchange short and simple information in everyday situations. (Basic user)
- B1 – Threshold: You understand the main points of clear language and can manage in most everyday situations. (Independent user)
- B2 – Vantage: You can communicate clearly and fluently on a wide range of topics, including professional matters. (Independent user)
- C1 – Effective operational proficiency: You understand complex texts and express yourself fluently and in a structured manner. (Proficient user)
- C2 – Mastery: You can understand virtually everything you hear or read with ease and express yourself spontaneously and precisely while distinguishing finer shades of meaning. (Proficient user)
4.3. What happens if my level is low?
A low result does not constitute a failure.
The purpose of the test is to determine your actual language level in order to:
- adapt the support you receive during your job search;
- identify job offers that match your language skills;
- where appropriate, guide you towards suitable training based on your career plans.
The test assesses reading comprehension and grammar only. It does not assess speaking skills.
If speaking is your main strength, your personal counsellor will take this into account as part of the support you receive.
4.4. Can I obtain a statement of my results?
Yes.
You can ask your personal counsellor for a statement containing:
- the language or languages tested;
- the date of the test;
- the language level achieved.
The statement is generated from your file but does not constitute an official language certificate.
4.5. Can I see the test answers and corrections?
No.
The answers and corrections cannot be viewed or provided due to copyright restrictions imposed by the test platform.
4.6. How can I retake the test?
You cannot retake the test on your own initiative.
A new test request must be issued by your personal counsellor, particularly in the following situations:
- your result does not reflect your actual language level;
- a previous test result or certificate is no longer valid;
- you wish to update your file after completing a language course.
If you believe that a new test is required, please contact your personal counsellor.
4.7. Do I need to send the result to my personal counsellor myself?
No.
You do not need to take any action.
Your test result is automatically transferred to your file and will be visible to your personal counsellor from the following morning.
