The linguistic situation in Luxembourg is complex. The three adimistrative languages are Lëtzebuergesch (or Luxembourgish), French and German. Luxembourgish is the language most widely spoken by the residents in the daily life. French is the legislative language.
At the workplace, depending on the origin or nationality of the company, the working language may be Luxembourgish, French, German, English or even Portuguese. French and English predominate, especially in the service sector. In the public sector, it is necessary to master the Luxembourgish language as well as French and German; whereas in the construction sector Portuguese is widely spoken.
In general, the native born Luxembourgers are multilingual and also speak French, German, English and, in many cases, other foreign languages, next to their mother tongue, which is Luxembourgish.
